Description

Communication and Computation are inherently connected to technological progress which is transforming our world in a dramatic way: We are surrounded by increasingly larger collections of intelligent embedded devices empowering a range of objects in our vicinity with capabilities to interact, to perceive their environment, and to adapt to dynamically changing requirements. These objects have to communicate among each other and with their human users, they have to compute adequate responses to the information they acquire by communication, and, obviously, effective communication crucially depends on effective and efficient computations. Scenarios like e.g. smart houses, smart cars, or smart shops are being interconnected to form large networks of adaptive systems capable of providing a broad range of services. In order to exploit this tremendous potential for reshaping our professional and private living and working environments we have to cope with a large number of challenges which go far beyond the traditional challenges of system design and engineering. An adequate response to these challenges depends on a deep understanding and an intelligent exploitation of the combined capabilities of communication and computation, or, to emphasize their inherent interrelationship, of COMMputation.
