Background:

Critical information infrastructures (CII) are sociotechnical systems comprising essential software components, networks and information systems with pivotal impact on individuals, organizations, governments, economies, and society. These CII are operated in different domains like energy (electricity, oil, or gas management systems), transport (air, rail, or water transport), banking, health care, and digital infrastructures (internet exchange points or DNS service providers). The complexity of CII is ever-increasing as CII are becoming more interconnected. Furthermore, CII providers might outsource some of their systems to third-party providers. Such interconnection leads to entangled infrastructures with various actors and systems that are highly interdependent on each other. This interdependence also leads to unique threats: cascading failures that might affect all connected infrastructures and high requirements for security and reliability between and within interconnected CII.

Objective(s):

This thesis aims to create a better understanding about new challenged and threats that result from the interconnection of critical infrastructures. Students are required to identify and group challenges and threats of interconnected CII.
