The KIT has long been regarded as a leading center for highly automated driving. The Research Group of Applied Technical Cognitive Systems at the Institute of Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods (AIFB) at the KIT is concerned with the technologies of applied machine intelligence. Based on fundamental research, new systems such as autonomous service robots, autonomous vehicles or assistance systems with cognitive capabilities are to be realized. The use of these so-called technical-cognitive systems takes place primarily in the context of highly automated, efficient and inter-modal mobility. Who We Are Looking For In order to strengthen our interdisciplinary team, we are looking for graduates (diploma or master) in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering or related fields with excellent academic records to fill several full-time positions. We expect interest in interdisciplinary scientific work, self-motivation and teamwork for active and independent cooperation in research projects and teaching. Very good language skills in either German or English are required. What We Can Offer We offer a first-class environment with diverse, interesting research topics and projects for an accompanying PhD thesis. Due to the close cooperation with the Research Center for Information Technology (FZI) and various research and industry partners we can provide an ideal framework for researching innovative ideas, implementing them in a laboratory environment, testing them and then applying them in practice. Besides bright minds in the field, we have access both to highly developed software stacks as well as modern hardware. Several research vehicles, as well as complex simulators are available to evaluate and validate systems. In addition we test directly on the unique "Test Area for Autonomous Driving Baden-Wuerttemberg" in real-world road traffic. ==Job Description== We are researching the development of modern approaches for highly automated driving. For this purpose, we are integrating machine learning methods such as neural networks into autonomous systems. Such methods must be highly robust against natural influences and targeted attacks. In the project "Safe Mobility" in cooperation with KASTEL, learning methods are to be evaluated on the basis of their safety-critical properties. In your work, you will simulate targeted attacks against learned methods like adversarial attacks and carry them out on our autonomous vehicles. Subsequently, you will increase the robustness of the learning procedures against successful attacks and natural influences.

Personal Qualifications

You posess
  • a very good Master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, information systems, business engineering or a related technical or scientific course of study. Candidates, that want to achieve a PhD are preferred.

[[Stellenausschreibung205/en|Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Research Unit "AI-based Methodology for the Fast Maturation of Immature Manufacturing Processes" FOR5339 was recently established at KIT and Fraunhofer institutes.

The research group Web Science deals with the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) methods. This includes the semantic representation of knowledge through knowledge graphs, machine learning, and the processing of natural language.

You will be part of a large, interdisciplinary team from the fields of production engineering and computer science and explore fundamentally new approaches in seven sub-projects to make the complex development phases of new production processes faster, more cost-effective and efficient through the targeted use of AI methods.

Your activities include research in the field of Semantic Web/Linked Data/Knowledge Graphs for manufacturing. Your work will be to investigate novel methods in order to answer hybrid queries on semantic (i.e. factual) and physical knowledge (as represented in physical models based rooted in differential equations) from asset administration shells and digital twins using AI methods.

In addition to research work, you are also active in teaching, especially Artificial Intelligence, and you participate in science administration.

There is the possibility of pursuing a doctorate.


Personal qualification

You have a degree (Master) in Industrial Engineering and Management, Informatics/Computer Science, Business Informatics, or in related fields. Ideally, you have experience in:

  • Semantic Technologies or symbolic Artificial Intelligence
  • Formal Methods to model dynamic systems

and you are interested in topics including:

  • Manufacturing
  • Question answering
  • Large Language Models
  • Research data management
  • Asset administration shells and digital twins

Programming experience is highly advantageous. On top, you can excel using a high level of self-motivation and the ability to work in a team. A very good command of the English language in speech and writing completes your profile. Proficiency in German is very welcome.

The research assistants will support the scientific staff of the Systems, Data, Simulation & Energy (SYDSEN) research group. The SYDSEN research group concentrates on the use of data for providing decision support and enhancing energy efficiency, reliability and other performance metrics of cyber-physical systems, such as energy systems or smart manufacturing systems. In particular, our focus is on the development of new methods and approaches for data-driven modeling and simulation and its seamless integration with expert knowledge. The positions are linked to our project ONE4ALL (Horizon Europe 2022), which aims to boost manufacturing plants’ transformation, especially SMEs, towards industry 5.0 (I5.0), reinforcing their resilience under unexpected changes in social needs. Our part in this project is the digital replication of the physical modules and processes through data-driven digital twins and controlled by a self-learning AI-based distributed and multidisciplinary decision support system (DSS). The Cooperative Autonomous Systems research group focuses on autonomous vehicles and vulnerable road users. We research the latest technologies and methods to improve road safety. By means of simulations in augmented and virtual reality as well as real-lab tests, we are already making the future possible today. About Us

At the research group “Applied Technical-Cognitive Systems”, we are at the forefront of deep learning in the context of applied machine intelligence. Our research is in the area of autonomous systems, from self-driving cars (CoCar NextGen, CoCar and the shuttles Anna and Ella) to autonomous service robots. Job Description

Developing generally capable reinforcement learning agents poses a significant challenge, especially in hard exploration tasks. Expert robotic data is scarce and expensive, but also reward functions are not easy to design for complex tasks. On the other hand, unlabeled expert video data is abundant, but not straightforward to learn behavioral priors from, as no labels exist (actions).

In this research, we want to investigate how we can train agents on unlabeled expert videos, such as YouTube videos, in a scalable way to master a wide variety of complex tasks, not solvable by conventional reinforcement learning. For support on this topic, we are searching for a motivated student.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing and training deep learning models.
  • Reading related research papers and participating in discussions on the topic.
  • Collaborating with us on experimental design, execution, and evaluation.
  • Other tasks as assigned related to our research.


Qualifications
  • Current enrollment as a student at KIT.
  • Strong interest in deep learning and machine learning.
  • Knowledge of the programming language Python.
  • Knowledge of PyTorch and/or Tensorflow.
  • Experience in working with Linux and Git.
  • Motivated to read research papers.
