In several industries, we have seen the introduction of modern IT innovations as digitalization is progressing. Digitalization is broadly defined as a manifold sociotechnical phenomenon and processes of adopting and using these technologies in broader individual, organizational, and societal contexts. In other words, it describes what and how IT is used on different levels. Although several definitions of the concept “Digitalization” have been provided in the literature, it is unclear what different factors make up the concept “digitalization” in healthcare (e.g., performance of clinical computer systems, availability of technical support, …). Looking at digitalization in healthcare is especially important as employees might come with a different understanding of what digitalization is compared to other industries.

The development of an understanding of the concept digitalization on different levels is especially relevant given the low degree of digitalization in healthcare. Eventually, these two perspectives can help to explain why organization see the degree of digitalization as sufficient while employees might see it as outright insufficient when their understanding of digitalization is different.

- Compile a list of conceptualizations of digitalization

- Compile a list of constructs related to employees’ perceived state of digitalization

- Analyze the understanding of what digitalization is on different levels of employees (e.g., operative level, management level, strategic level)

- Compare HC to other industries (e.g., while in other industries, the use of AI might be an important factor that is related to digitalization, due to data privacy regulations, it might not be in HC)

Note: This is an umbrella topic. The overall goal, context, and direction of the thesis are defined in the first kickoff meeting.
