Semantic Web Search – A Process-Oriented Perspective on Data Retrieval on the Semantic Web

Veranstaltungsart:
Graduiertenkolloquium

The main objective of Semantic Web search is to address more complex information needs. The challenges that lie ahead include dealing with the large and increasing volume of data on the Semantic Web, its heterogeneity as well as its complexity. From the system point of view, complexity poses additional requirements for data management and processing. But also, complexity imposes additional burden on the user. An effective Semantic Web search solution should not only be efficient, scalable and deliver high quality results but also, the users must also be able to exploit it. In this talk, I will present the SemSearchPro approach, one of the first solutions towards large-scale Semantic Web search which aims to address these challenges of data volume, heterogeneity, complexity and usability. SemSearchPro uses an index, whose design is inspired by Web search technologies that have proven to scale to the Web scenario. For dealing with heterogeneous data, SemSearchPro leverages and extends the large body of research work on database integration to support efficient federated query processing on the Semantic Web. For usability as well as for efficiency, SemSearchPro heavily relies on the use of semantic models. They are used throughout the entire search process including the steps of query construction, query processing, result presentation and result refinement. That is, SemSearchPro goes beyond the single step of query processing to incorporate the use of semantics into a wider context – with the goal to improve the overall user experience and to support process-oriented Semantic Web search.
