KAON - The Karlsruhe Ontology and Semantic Web Tool Suite

Project Status: completed

Description

The Web in its? current form is an impressive success with a growing number of users and information sources. However, the growing complexity of the Web is not reflected in the current state of Web technology. The heavy burden of accessing, extracting, interpretating and maintaining information is left to the human user. The Semantic Web having the vision of machine-processable and -interpretable provides means for solving these problems. The Semantic Web is not a separate Web, it is just being developed on top of the existing Web. Ontologies and metadata are important means for realizing the vision of the Semantic Web. RDF (Resource Description Framework) provided by W3C has been identified as a core data model and infrastructure for ontologies and metadata. Several RDF- APIs, parsers, schema and metadata editors, etc. have been developed within the Semantic Web community. However, to establish the Semantic Web much more specialized, comprehensive and intregated tools are required. The Karlsruhe Ontology (KAON) tool suite builds on RDF and provides specialized tools for the SDK, engineering, discovery, management, and presentation of ontologies and metadata. KAON is currently growing to a family of tools, whose aim is to make your life in the age of the Semantic Web easier. We mainly distinguish between the KAON frontend tools and the KAON backend tools. OntoMat-Framework is a comprehensive and flexible integrated development environment and builds the backbone of the KAON frontend tools. It provides a basic support for an application, e.g. a generic plug-in and service mechanism for all KAON plugins. In combination with additional plugins it enables several applications such as ONTOMAT or SOEP. The KAON-API builds on the RDF data model and is the core data access component of all KAON tools, thus, it is the backbone for the KAON backend tools.
